Family Life

My second daughter was born in September. Finding free time is even more difficult than it was before. Whatever modicum of free time that I had before has seemingly vanished. The only way to get anything done is to do it while everyone is asleep. Workouts are now done at 5:00 am, studying for LEVEL 3 is reserved for downtime in the hospital, and hobbies (i.e., this blog) are temporarily on hold. Thankfully, my Transitional Year (TY) program is family-friendly and has been supportive of me during this time.

Intern Year

I am now about 5 months into my TY that I must complete before beginning my Diagnostic Radiology (DR) training in July 2026 at my advanced program. As time passes, my decision to pursue radiology has been vindicated. There are moments where being a clinician is gratifying, but I mostly feel eager to retreat to the reading room as a diagnostician.

My advanced program is in a new city that my wife and I have never lived in before. There is some angst about having to pack up and move the family ~350 miles away, however, I am excited for this new chapter in our lives. I am hopeful that this will be a positive opportunity for our family.

When I was applying to DR as an MS-4 I was telling programs that I was primarily interested in Nuclear Medicine, Breast, or Peds, but now I am beginning to reconsider Interventional Radiology (IR). My only hangup with IR is the somewhat-surgical lifestyle. This is something that I will have to explore further over the next 2-3 years. If I choose to do IR, then I hope to obtain an Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) position.

Current Goals:

  • Pass LEVEL 3 in December (no more USMLEs 🙂)
  • Workout ≥3 times per week
  • Determine interest in IR and get involved if desired
  • Read daily for fun (usually fiction at night in bed)
  • Learn how to intelligently invest in stock market

Non-exhaustive Bucket List:

  • Write a book related to medicine & wellness
  • Learn how to play Tennis and/or Golf (✅)
  • Learn how to draw/paint
  • Run a marathon in less than 4 hours
